We had a rough evening. It was not planned. I had to go to several different places. Mostly because we could not agree on what we wanted for dinner. I made it a point to say that we are doing this every night. I did not have a chance to plan something and that is why we were searching for something. I don’t want my kids to have the mentality that they can drive people to get what they want and then not take people’s feelings into consideration. I don’t want them to be total people pleasers. However, I don’t want them to be steam rollers either. You know the type of person. The narcissist that does not have any empathy for others is not going to be tolerated.
I teach my kids to have empathy and compassion for others. There are people who don’t know that they are mean and rude. There are people who don’t know that they hurt people’s feelings. They don’t care. Some people are so focused on their own ambitions that they don’t see other people. My kids can be difficult but I know they are not focused on themselves. I like to point out to them how important it is to empathize with people and have compassion. They know that some kids don’t have a house to live in. They know that some kids don’t get toys. They have donated toys to the local shelter.
